For a construction project, importing steel starts before a supplier receives the enquiry. The buyer needs an approved material schedule, a controlled drawing revision and a delivery sequence that matches the work on site.
This article focuses on preparing a multi-item project order. For trade terms, shipment documents and the wider import process, use How to Import Steel from China to Africa. Destination requirements must be checked for the specific country and product, not assumed from the project’s regional location.
In this guide
- Prepare the project BOQ
- Technical approval
- Delivery sequencing
- Receiving and document handover
- CanHope coordination
Build a BOQ that can be quoted line by line
Give every item a unique reference. Keep pipes, fittings, structural materials and fabricated components in identifiable packages, even if they may ultimately share a shipment. This makes omissions and substitutions easier to review.
| Material package | Minimum information to include |
|---|---|
| Steel pipe | Standard, material grade, actual outside diameter, wall thickness, length, coating, end preparation and quantity. |
| Fittings and valves | Type, size, end connection, pressure or service requirement, model restrictions and project approval requirements. |
| Sections and plates | Section designation or plate dimensions, grade, tolerances, length/thickness and quantity. |
| Fabricated parts | Approved drawing revision, dimensions, tolerances, welding or other processing requirements, finish and marking. |
| Packing and delivery | Site package or zone, required sequence, package limits and receiving/unloading constraints. |
List the exact standard rather than a broad label such as “ASTM.” Keep material grade, wall-thickness schedule and product approval in separate fields. Any proposed equivalence or substitution needs the responsible project reviewer’s acceptance.

Set technical approval before ordering
- Identify who approves product datasheets, drawings and substitutions.
- Ask the supplier to return an item-by-item offer with deviations clearly marked.
- Agree the required quality records and inspection hold points before production or processing.
- Confirm approved quantities and drawing revisions in writing before releasing an item.
A certificate for one product or manufacturer does not approve an entire mixed package. For fire-protection materials in particular, check the exact model, size and application against the project’s requirements. A shipment photograph cannot establish that approval.
Use a delivery plan, not just a target sailing date
Work back from the required site date. Allow separately for technical review, production or sourcing, processing, inspection, packing, carrier booking and destination clearance. Ask the logistics team for the actual route and current schedule when the order is ready to book.
Decide which items can wait for consolidation and which are needed earlier. Combining every item in one container can delay the whole package if one line is not ready. Agree whether partial shipment is acceptable and how added freight or handling would be approved.

Plan receiving and document handover
Ask the site team to confirm the unloading method and storage area before the loading plan is finalised. Request package marks that connect to the BOQ and agree which drawings, inspection records and packing information the receiving team needs.
Before dispatch, have the destination importer or broker check the goods description, classification and country-specific document requirements. Port selection should reflect the final delivery route and actual logistics arrangements, not a generic list of major African ports.
What CanHope can coordinate
CanHope has its own galvanized-steel-pipe manufacturing resources and can coordinate additional sections, plates and other project materials through its Foshan Steel World supply network. Selected fabrication and mixed-shipment coordination are reviewed against the drawings, quantities and loading plan.
For a realistic proposal, send the approved BOQ and drawing revision, destination country and port, required site date, and any inspection or approval requirements to info@canhopesteel.com. See the container-loading examples for packing and handling context. Availability, documentation and timing need confirmation for the specific order.
